🧾 GST Update: Invoice Numbers to Be Case-Insensitive for IRN Generation from 1st June 2025
In a recent advisory dated 4th April 2025, the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) announced an important update for businesses generating e-invoices. Starting 1st June 2025, the Invoice Reference Number (IRN) generation process will treat invoice/document numbers as case-insensitive.
🔄 What’s Changing?
- Invoice numbers like
"abc"
,"ABC"
, or"Abc"
will now be treated as the same by the Invoice Reporting Portal (IRP). - During IRN generation, all invoice numbers will be automatically converted to uppercase.
- This change aligns IRN treatment with GSTR-1 filing, which already treats invoice numbers in a case-insensitive manner.
✅ Why This Matters
This update is aimed at:
- Avoiding duplication of invoice numbers due to letter casing
- Ensuring consistency in GST filings and compliance
- Preventing IRN rejection errors that may occur due to minor case differences
🛠️ What Should Taxpayers Do?
- Update ERP or invoicing software to ensure invoice numbers follow a uniform format.
- Avoid using case sensitivity in invoice numbering going forward.
- Inform your accounting and IT teams to make necessary system-level changes before 1st June 2025.
